Honestly IMO 3D engines will only increase the visual and mechanical fidelity of 2D games - and this community is poised to have some great releases in the near future benefiting from Unitys 2D ability in a 3D engine. Īnd there are others that have caught my eye from these forums also - Blubber Busters and The Bug Butcher both look really fun and visually beautiful. I think one of the most beautiful 2D games that will be coming out in Unity is Eitr. This is one benefit Unity has over most/all dedicated 2D engines - since Unity is a 3D engine by default - developers have a ton more options to solve complexity and enhance mechanics and visuals. Just wondering - could Ori even be made in GameMaker? I highly doubt it. In addition to the visuals, the game has beautiful music, sound and visual fx, UI, lighting, awesome story, and pretty fun platforming, minus the couple levels I was talking about. HOWEVER the game is one of the most (maybe most) beautiful 2D games I have ever played, with ULTRA attention to detail down to the extreme minutest level. Instead of allowing the player to learn the level and platforming mechanics by dieing a couple times, after improving those mechanics the player should be able to beat the level without problem, however with the catch up mechanic the player character is never more than one tiny mistake away from death and starting the level over again. There are a few pretty complex platforming levels in the game where the character is running from death - and death has a catch up mechanic which totally over complicates the level. I created a thread about Ori a while ago - focused on one specific mechanic in the game.
